Fix Strange Characters ’ and  appearing in WordPress Posts / Pages

Fix strange characters in Wordpress

Recently I upgraded the WordPress to latest version on my blog and encountered a problem of strange characters appearance within the posts and pages. After browsing couple of things finally I resolved the issue, actually it was an encoding hitch that has converted symbols into such strange characters.

This included hyphens, quotation, apostrophe and exclamation marks (-, “, ‘, !). The characters which i found have replaced the above mentioned symbols were question marks,’ and .

The solution to this problem is quiet simple, just follow these steps:

1. Open wp-config.php file via FTP

2. Find the following lines within the file.

define(‘DB_CHARSET’, ‘utf8’);
define(‘DB_COLLATE’, “);

3. Now disable “utf8” by either removing it after which the lines will look like this:

define(’DB_CHARSET’,”);
define(’DB_COLLATE’, ”);

Otherwise you can mark them as a comment also by just adding two backslashes in the start of each line

//define(‘DB_CHARSET’, ‘utf8’);
//define(‘DB_COLLATE’, “);

Now press Ctrl + F5 key and browse your site. Fixed right?
